Medical Camp and Khichuri Bhojon for the poor

Narayan Seva on Gurupurnima on 25th July, 2010

Gurupurnina is the day when the devotee wakes up in full gratitude to the Master. Punarnabha Bangla team and The Art of Living Kolkata chapter had decided to dedicate the day to our not so privileged brothers and sisters living in slums. We wanted to serve them food and give them free medical consultation and medicines. The slum chosen was Basanti Debi Colony near Chingrighata crossing where we had already taken Nava Chetana Shibir.

The preparation for khichree and sabji and camp started at around 11 o clock, Along with this melodious bhajans of Art of Living were played. There were 20+ volunteers led by Niranjan Singh ji. The camp and khichree distribution were done in a school complex called Basanti Niketan Vidyapeeth. The doctor-devotees who volunteered themselves for the event were Dr Parthasarathy Sengupta and Dr N.C Divakar. They treated around 130 patients for a span of 3.5 hours without taking any break for food.

The little children came trotting by for food at around 12. All the volunteers swung into action. Plates were laid down, khichri and sabji were being served. There were around 6/7 batches of children followed by the elders. In total around 1300 children and 900 adults ate. Just like in a symphony, all the volunteers played part with unwavering attention. It looked like as if we are in a flow , and things are simply happening around us. We got a lot of help and support from the local people some of whom had done the Nava Chetana Shibir.

The program wrapped up around 4 PM and left all with a sweet feeling of fulfillment.
